The building doesn’t fight itself

Brut is a 1953 brutalist slab in Tulsa’s Riverview neighborhood, and the easy thing would have been to apologize for the concrete — to warm it away, cover it, soften it into something else. Brut does the opposite. It leaves the concrete exactly as severe as it always was, and then lets everything human happen against it: jute underfoot, greenery climbing the walls, potted succulents on the sills, low warm light. The tension is the whole point. Cold structure, warm life. You feel it the moment the door closes behind you — imposing from the street, calm the instant you’re inside.

The designers called it “tropical brutalism,” or, more honestly, “high-end hippie.” Both are true. Neither quite captures how deliberate the restraint is.

It isn’t one place — it’s five

The thing that stayed with me after checking out: Brut isn’t a hotel with amenities. It’s five distinct worlds sharing one set of bones.

• Soma — the rooftop, 360° over the Tulsa skyline and the Arkansas River

• 1820 Spa — the stillness floor

• Rosa — the pool bar, warmer and looser

• Dweller Café — the daily, ground-level rhythm

• The rooms — 82 of them, each themed differently

Each has its own name, its own logo, its own character. What none of them fully says out loud is that they’re all the same world — the same concrete-and-greenery grammar, the same refusal to be one obvious thing. That coherence is real. It just isn’t articulated yet.

Not a quality problem.

Not even a confidence problem, exactly.

A format problem.

The standard advice — choose your strongest pieces, narrow the work down, let the best examples speak for themselves — never quite fit.

I’d try.

I’d pick the strongest image from a shoot. The cleanest execution from a campaign. The single piece that should represent the whole thing.

And every time, something felt missing.

Not because the work wasn’t strong enough.

Because one piece was never the work.

What I make is a brand world.

And a world doesn’t exist in a single frame.

One photograph from a shoot tells you almost nothing about the decisions that created it. One email separated from the larger experience loses the conversation it was part of.

The thing I’m building lives in the accumulation.

The way the visuals, language, moments, and decisions start reinforcing each other until something becomes recognizable.

Until it feels inevitable.

To understand what’s actually happening — to see the eye behind it — you have to see the whole room.

The solution arrived the way most of my best solutions do:

out of necessity, before I had language for it.

I needed a way to show work across wildly different dimensions and mediums — photography, campaigns, digital experiences, print, social — without the inconsistency of every format making the work feel disconnected.

So I started adding a frame.

A simple border around everything.

A way to let each piece exist individually while still belonging to something larger.

And then I laid them out together.

Everything from one brand world, side by side.

Contained. Connected. In conversation.

And suddenly the through line was obvious.

A contact sheet.

Of course.

That’s what it had always been reaching toward.

My brain knew before I did.

This is, I’ve come to understand, how I work.

I’m strategic.

But often, the instinct arrives first.

Earlier in my career, I thought I had to reverse-engineer the explanation before trusting the instinct. Now I understand the instinct is often the first signal — and strategy is the process of uncovering why it was right.

It was never guesswork.

It was pattern recognition moving faster than language.

The language always comes.

The framework always follows.

But sometimes the eye sees the shape before the mind has named it.

What the contact sheet gave me wasn’t just a portfolio format.

It gave me a way to finally see my own through line.

You can’t always see your own pattern from the inside.

You need distance.

You need the pieces laid out in front of you.

You need the whole room.

And when I finally saw it that way, I understood something I’d been circling for years:

My work has always been series thinking.

Not singles.

Not isolated moments.

The whole composition.

It’s why I work best when I have the full creative picture.

Not one channel.

Not one deliverable.

Not five ads.

The room.

The strategy. The visuals. The language. The tiny decisions that seem insignificant until they add up to a feeling.

Because that’s where the work actually lives.

In the relationships between things.

The through line was always there.

I just needed enough distance to see it.

If someone came to mind while reading this, that’s usually worth paying attention to. Pass it along.

Not because my eye is better.

Because I’m not holding the camera.

I’m not circling the subject or managing the light or thinking about the next setup. I’m just standing there, free to notice.

And I’ll say:

Come here. Stand where I’m standing. See what I’m seeing.

Then they go take the picture.

And I realize, every time, that I’ve been doing this same thing my whole life — in every room, on every street — just without anyone to hand it off to.

What took me longer to admit is that the camera roll on my phone is the same instinct.

No set. No brief. No one waiting for the answer.

Just hundreds of moments where something quietly became worth catching.

I’ve always taken the picture.

What changed is that I finally let myself treat the noticing as the practice.

Here’s what I mean.

You’re standing somewhere.

You’re not searching. You’re not arranging. You’re not waiting for something better.

And then, suddenly, what’s already there resolves.

The chair is exactly where it should be. The shadow cuts across the wall. The colors that shouldn’t belong together somehow do.

Nothing moved.

You just saw it.

That’s the thing I keep trying to catch.

I’ve resisted calling this art for a long time.

Partly because the medium wasn’t obvious. There was no canvas, no darkroom, no craft I could point to and say: I learned this.

And partly because this particular practice — noticing, catching, collecting — always felt more like curation than creation.

Which is strange, because building is the other thing I do.

Brands. Teams. Worlds around ideas.

That part has never been in question.

But this felt different.

Less like making something happen.

More like recognizing when it already has.

And maybe that’s what kept me from claiming it.

Because real curation isn’t just collecting beautiful things.

It’s knowing what belongs together before you can explain why.

It’s seeing the thread before there’s a name for it.

It’s the practiced instinct that makes something feel inevitable.

And maybe that’s a medium too.

For years it lived in my camera roll: fragments with nowhere to go.

A hand against a wall.

Light through a particular window.

A floor that clearly had a conversation behind it.

Each one made sense on its own.

What I couldn’t see was the through line — the eye that had been selecting all of it.

Writing them down changed that.

Not the photographs.

The language.

Trying to explain why this stopped me. Why this belonged. Why this tiny ordinary thing felt like evidence of something larger.

That’s when I realized the collection had always been the work.

I just hadn’t given it a place to exist.

I guess that’s really what art is.

Not the medium.

The compulsion to notice, and the commitment to not let it pass.

This morning started beautifully. Decorations everywhere. Breakfast carefully carried in tiny hands. A party blower launched directly into my face before my first sip of coffee because the excitement simply could not be contained.

They raided my birthday decoration stash — the one I pull from for all of their birthdays — and used it on me instead.

There was visible pride in every inch of the morning.

And then, almost immediately after breakfast, everyone started fighting.

It’s barely 10:00 a.m. and I’ve already threatened to outlaw WWE moves on the couch because if someone breaks it, we simply will not have a couch anymore.

Which honestly feels like motherhood in its purest form.

The beauty and the chaos existing almost simultaneously.

The part I keep thinking about, though, is how intentional they were this morning. Staying up until 1:00 a.m. making paper chains. Trying so hard to create a moment for their mom. All of their energy directed toward love and excitement and making me feel celebrated.

That’s the part I decided to capture today.

The toast balanced carefully in small hands.

The party blower to the face.

The pride in their eyes while they waited for me to see what they made.

Because those micro-moments disappear quickly.

Anyway, pray for my couch.

And if things continue on their current trajectory, we may all be developing exceptional core strength from sitting exclusively on floor cushions by next week.

Our Airbnb in Polanco looked like it used to be an old bank

— a building built when craftsmanship meant something, and marble walls were a declaration of confidence.

Thirty-foot ceilings.

Marble from top to bottom.

Green-gold veining that looked like it had been painted with light.

I walked past one of the walls and had to stop.

There's a specific kind of beauty that demands a witness

- not dramatic, not loud, just quietly exquisite. I reached out and put my hand against the stone, the cool surface grounding me instantly.

It felt too perfect not to document.

Just my hand, the sleeve of my Anthro jacket with its striped cuff, and this impossibly gorgeous slab of Art Deco-era marble. A tiny moment of contact with a building that had clearly lived several lives before mine ever intersected with it.

Sometimes your surroundings ask you to slow down and feel something — a texture, a temperature, a history beneath your fingertips.

This was one of those moments.

Ten-hour flights.
Compressed into spaces that don’t quite feel human.
All of it justified by the idea that it will be worth it once you arrive.

And it was.

Then today, I was at the mall with my kids.

Not in a poetic way.
Just… standing outside a store while they wandered in and out, deciding what they liked.

Same place I’ve been a hundred times.
Same loop. Same lighting. Same everything.

And I realized I was holding this place completely differently.

When I travel, I have this insatiable need to see everything.
To extract something from it.
To make it worth the effort it took to get there.

But here—
in the places I routinely return to out of pure function—
I don’t ask for anything.

I don’t expect anything either.

I wasn’t really looking for anything.
And then there was a moment—

Light coming through the skylights on the second floor.

It wasn’t remarkable.

Or maybe I just didn’t want it to be.

I almost didn’t take the photo.

Not because it wasn’t there,
but because I’d already decided it wouldn’t measure up.

Not to Paris.
Not to Rome.
Not to anything I’ve labeled as worth noticing this week.

And I think that’s when it clicked—how much of that is just bias.

Noticing isn’t something I turn on when I travel.
I do it all the time—just not always in the same places.

I do it with my kids—
the way my son’s hands look gripping the sides of one of those ride-on toys,
the ones that take four quarters and feel slightly too small for them already.

Those moments don’t need justification.

I don’t question whether they’re worth capturing.

So it was strange to realize
how quickly I dismiss some of the places I move through every day.

How easily I sometimes decide they’re not worth the same attention.

I took the photo anyway.

It didn’t turn out like the one I would’ve taken somewhere else.

But I’m starting to think that might not be the point.

There’s something about the way I see when I travel
that I don’t always turn on here at home.

I think I’m starting to notice the gap.

Time slowed just enough to see it.

Nothing about the place had shifted.

Only the conditions of attention.

Light doesn’t transform anything.

In Paris, I was aware of the distance.

The space between where I was

and what I thought I should be seeing.

Here, there was no gap.

It moved at the same pace I did.

There’s a kind of ease that doesn’t announce itself.

It just removes friction.

And in that absence—

you stop trying to get it right.

You just look.

Not everything needs to be learned.

I thought Paris would be easy.

Rome came naturally—small moments, fragments, details. The way I already see things.

Paris felt… larger than that.
Wider. More distant.

For the first 24 hours, I kept shooting and missing it.

Nothing landed. Nothing felt like mine.

Not from exhaustion.
Just a quiet disconnect.

And then, slowly, it did.

It wasn’t the landmarks.

It took time to understand how to look at it.

At Paris.

Then something shifted.

The scale didn’t change—
but I started noticing again.

Light on stone.
Edges. Reflections. Small interruptions.

The same way I always do.
